Excellent. Great breakfast food--biscuits and sausage gravy was delicious, omelet was great, sunflower toast from homemade bread extremely tasty. Have not tried the homemade pies as it was too early in the morning to indulge, but they looked really good.

Breakfast at Kate's is a treat. The biscuits and gravy are delicious, the country ham salty enough to dehydrate you for the rest of the day, the eggs fresh and cooked to perfection, but who are we kidding? If you're at Kate's, you're there for pie. Delicious, homemade pies, in a variety of flavors. All with a thick, flaky, light as air crust that can only be created by using lard. Your grandma knew this, and so do the cooks at Kate's. Very reasonable prices, particularly given the quality of the pies. Get one to go!

Good service, great food. Restaurant was busy when we got there (9AM on a Tuesday). Friend and I ordered coffees and two orders of biscuits and gravy. Coffee was good (nothing special), and refilled promptly. Our food order took 45 minutes, but was well worth the wait. If chef Gordon Ramsey were to eat biscuits and gravy, he would eat here. If musician David Grohl was in town, I would take him here. If Jesus had a breakfast hankering, he would try the biscuits and gravy. If...well, you get the point. Reasonable prices and friendly staff. Did not try the baked goods, but will have to in the future.

A little hole in the wall, that one would normally pass right by. Kept seeing the line waiting to get in & hearing people talk about it! Curiosity got me & I had to give it a try. "Man, I'm glad I did!" The "BEST" breakfast ever! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their country ham & strawberry rhubarb pie!!! You gotta go, when in the area! Check before hand because they have VERY limited hours :-))

Great for breakfast, with homemade and tasty food. Coconut cream pie is out of this world.

I went to Kate's Kitchen for the first time last month, and I am now a biscuit believer. I tend to steer clear from most places biscuits as I grew up with traditional lard biscuits, but when I saw the ones coming out of the kitchen, I added one to my feta and spinach omlette. It was flakey, warm and delicious. The service was no nonsense, and our food arrived quickly and was high quality. I will be back to try their Cuban.

We stopped by Monday when they were closed, SO glad we came back today - we are planning on coming again on this trip!! Our 12 yr old son called the grilled raisin toast with icing "a little slice of heaven" and our 9 yr old daughter exclaimed over the biscuits: "they're so tender!" These were homemade, not Bisquick! I watched the fresh berries being sliced in the back for the 'biscuits with strawberries' special. We then fought over the lemon meringue pie slice we could NOT resist for breakfast dessert. The meringue was light and not overly sweet or tough and the lemon filling had a custard touch to it - eating it just slightly warm still from the oven made it a pie I will dream about.

Great breakfast! Always good. Friendly service. Quick on coffee refills. Love the homemade toast, the sunflower is my favorite. The lemon meringue pie is to die for!

My favorite breakfast spot by far! Also has great pies. I don't get to go often, and you have to go before Church gets out Sundays. But great service and reasonably priced. Downside is cash only!

Okay, I have heard about Kate's Kitchen for awhile now and three buddies and myself checked it out yesterday. I didn't think there would be much to brag about since it was breakfast but I can now say it was a great breakfast and I will be back. Everyone enjoyed the food. I ordered two eggs over easy perfect, ham delicious, biscuits and gravy outstanding and home fries. The home fries didn't look special but they were cooked correctly and tasted good. I just had water to drink. The price was $7.80 plus the tip. On the way out I grabbed a peach pie which was outstanding and one of my friends grabbed a mixed berry pie he said his family enjoyed that. I will be back and my friends will as well.

Great biscuits and gravy, and pies. All the other breakfast items are good, but not in the same stratoshere as the biscuits and gravy. Service and coffee is very good. Be prepared for a line out the door on weekend mornings. I ate recently at the famous Loveless Café in Nashville, The Biscuits and Gravy were good, but not in the same ballpark as Kates.

I previously gave this restaurant a three star review. But I went to try it again and realized I was a bit harsh. I love the sunflower seed toast and the salty ham. The biscuits are great but the gravy is a little bland. However, I really like this place and most of the food is great. The service was better the second time too.

Cash only. Clean and friendly neighborhood place. Plenty of awesome looking baked goods for sale; pies, bread, etc. I dined in and had a chicken salad sandwich and fries. The server asked what kind of bread for my sandwich, and I opted for rye. The sandwich was tasty, but I was surprised to see the bread was not toasted, and rather flimsy for sandwiches. The lemon meringue pie was excellent! I would go back to try other menu items, though I hope they fix the loud pie fridge motor that drowned out nearby conversations.

Maybe I just don't get it. It's pretty doggone hard to mess up breakfast. (Denny's and Big Boy excepted) No way in the world is it so good that it's worth standing outside in line for an hour or more. It's OK, but not that much better than any other mom and pop. Cramped atmosphere, and you always feel rushed.

WOW what a great homemade breakfast!!!! Taters with the peeling on them and fresh bisquits and gravy.... Looks small from the outside but has quite a few tables but bring cash no cards taken here.

I've driven past this place so many times and decided to stop in. Just wanted a regular BLT sandwich - which is what I got....it was average. Had a piece of their Lemon Meringue pie - which was still warm....great filling and crust, but the meringue tasted eggy, like it wasn't done right.......could have just been me - anyways it was a decent priced diner.....the deserts looked awesome...and they have frozen pies as well.... Not a bad little place.

My husband and I go on a quest every weekend for memorable breakfast places. Of all the ones we've gone to, Kates Kitchen is by far the BEST! Let me break it down for you... 1. Home made... everything 2. Best buscuits and gravy, outside of my own recipe. 3. Mile high pies 4. Even the toast is made from their home made breads... try the sunflower 5. Let the line out the door speak for itself. Go later in the morning for less of a rush. 6. Dearborn ham... keepin' it local... and yummy. This list could go on and on, but just trust me, if you live near the downriver area, make this place a definite stop.

This place is amazing! Our waitress was super sweet and never rushed us. My husband and mother in law had breakfast and I had the fresco sandwich and we all sort of shared because we have never been here before and we were beyond impressed!! Amazing biscuits and my sandwich is something I will be getting again for sure!!! Everything was fresh and delish! I would give more stars if I could!!!

I finally came here for the first time after my girlfriend telling me how good it was here, saying we had to go! The place is small, but it is comfortable . It is a nice little family setup, with nice people all around. The food was great, cheap, and came with decent size portions. The way I like it! If you are around this is the place to go, whether you go for lunch or breakfast. You will only be paying a small price for well prepared food.

This is a Flat Rock gem! Outstanding breakfast, and amazing pies! The bad part is usually a waiting line, and the place is small. Wish they would upgrade size wise. If you haven't tried it, you are missing out.

Kate's Kitchen, I wish that you would send a clone to San Diego where I live!!! Yes, you are simple, but you are also a purist when it comes to your bisccits and gravy. Yes your home cokking is proper. The pies and other home sweets are delish... I can't stop talking about the gravy.... I try to come and visit, when I can. My last visit was in 2011. And every time I come to Carleton to visit my parents, I order the biscuits and gravy. No one surpasses it. It is a dish that I have tasted over the years at many different establishments; however no one has Kate's touch. Quaint space, and homey decor. Our waitress was ok, nothing out of the ordinary service... however the BISCUITS and GRAVY make up for all!!!! I will be back again someday.

  • Rachel L.

OK....There is alot of hype surrounding this place. There is always a line out the door ( no waiting area inside), it's decor is dirty and out dated, it is super cramped and crowded, and the servers aren't very friendly. Their mission is fast service...nothing more. Be prepared for that. I have been having breakfast at this place for over 20 years and little has changed. Good (not great) food at a reasonable price. Breakfast and lunch selections. Good homemade biscuits and gravy. The cinnamon buns and other baked goodies are large and look impressive in the showcase but are dry and not very good....pass them up. The cream pies are an exception, as they are tasty as well as beautiful. A Flat Rock Tradition.

  • Al H.

Everyone raves over the biscuits and pies. Meh. What's the big deal? It's loud and crowded usually. If you don't mind that, really it's hard to mess up breakfast. It's easier to just go somewhere else and get pretty much the same thing and not wait in line or put up with the noise and the crappy atmosphere.

This was my favorite childhood breakfast spot. My mother frequently made my Appalachian Grandmothers biscuits and gravy recipe growing up, and this is the only place that tastes just as down home and home made. Everything tastes like it came out of your grandmas kitchen. What made me stand in the long lines outside before dawn, with a smile on my face, was the piping hot cinnamon and raisin toast covered in buttery icing. I almost died today when I took my first bite of the gooey homemade bread. A trip back to my happy, chubby adolescence was what I needed on a 20 degree day in February. The service was prompt but not rushed for a busy Sunday morning. Alisha, our waitress, was super friendly and made sure everything was just right. Try and walk out without a pie or cookie for later when all during breakfast you see them being pulled from the oven and placed to cool on racks near the entrance. I love Kate's kitchen. It was well worth the 45 minute drive in icy weather. Now for some raspberry pie.

Excellent fruit pies, nice flaky crust & a delicious fruit packed mouthful .... This place is very dangerous for me to stop at, drive near or dine at! I have not been able to stay away from the sugar cookies! This sugar cookie is a crunchy cookie w/ tons of icing... Try as I have, I always end up w/ one in my mouth..... So that been said, I can only stop here once a month... When I do, I must order that super cheesy, melty Cuban sandwich.. It's melty cheese's, ham. Bbq, spicy pickles & grilled sour dough are the ticket for my lunch order... Remember this place closes early daily!! Like at 2....thank God!!!

Kate's has certainly stepped up its' game over the years. I used to not even compare this restaurant to other coney islands in the area, but after trying their amazing biscuits and outstanding coffee I will say I am a believer. The omelette was also quite the treat as well!

Went here with my sisters on our weekly brunch outing. Heard a lot of good things about Kate's Kitchen so we went to check it out for ourselves. My sister called ahead to see if they were open and what their wait was. The lady that answered couldn't tell us how long the wait was, but did say that it was a half hour then changed to she didn't know because it wasn't out the door. Alas, we went anyways. I ordered their biscuit and gravy with eggs and sugar ham along with a side of cinnamon toast. My one sister got the same with bacon instead of ham and the other sister got their chicken dumpling soup and chocolate chip pancakes and bacon. So, the eggs were cooked as expected. I enjoyed the potatoes. The biscuits were homemade but felt like they were reheated and didn't hold to the end of the meal (I prefer the biscuits and gravy at the end). My sister enjoyed them. As for the gravy, I was told that it was homemade, but it very much tasted canned. The bacon and ham were cooked perfectly and tasted yummy. My sister enjoyed the pancakes and they were definitely massive. It's not my kind of pancakes that I like but they had good flavor. The real winner was the cinnamon toast. We shared and order and it was amazing. What better than cinnamon sugar good toasted bread and icing. At the end of the day the service was good and the food ok. I'd definitely say there was a lot of hype to this place and we might go back if the lines weren't long. My one regret was not ordering pie which is something they are known for.

My favorite is the basic bacon, eggs and biscuits breakfast. Everything about this place is good. Its small, you have to wait most days and the bathroom isn't the greatest, but the breakfast is great and the pies are divine.

Have heard about this place for years but it is a bit of a drive for us...finally made it to Flat Rock for breakfast and all I have to say is....I will never be there on the weekend again without stopping in for breakfast!! Their Biscuits and Gravy was DIVINE....and their homemade Rye bread was AMAZING!!! My friend and daughter ordered the Cinnamon Raisin French Toast and I was almost jealous, yes JEALOUS that I didn't order a side of that as well! The coffee was delicious and the waitress was AWESOME! They need a bigger "kitchen" the seating is limited but worth the wait if you need to :)

The worst food ever. Owner was nasty and yelling in front of other customers. Had to return all 4 orders, they were cold and never received the toast and bacon. They forgot one of our orders. Owner said she was going to call the police if we didn't pay for the cold horrible food. Had been going there for years but after that nasty horrible lady who said she was the owner opened her foul mouth, I WILL NEVER GO BACK! The waitress was nice, I feel sorry for her having to work for such a nasty person. I forgot to mention, party of four seated 30 minutes after us, ate their food and was leaving when our cold food arrived. Wish there was negative stars to award.

Great Breakfast! Get there early or be prepared to wait in a line out the door on weekends. The biscuits and gravy are what keep me coming back, the other breakfast and lunch items are also delicious. But the biscuits and gravy are the best in my opinion. Remember its CASH ONLY and to bring a few extra layers in the winter it can get a little chilly!

I went to Kates for breakfast for the first time on a Sunday morning. Yes, the church crowd was in full force.... it was PACKED with a line out the door at about 10:30am. Anyway, we were seated fairly quickly and our server was johnny-on-the-spot and attentive. The restaurant is small but clean and attractively decorated. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet. I swear to you, there was so much ham in that omelet I could have made a fat sandwich of it, I had to look for the cheese! I would have liked a bit less, but no big deal, next time I will say so. But try this dish if you like ham. It came with homemade wheat toast, very light and airy, and home fries. My husb had eggs over easy, biscuits & gravy and a slice of sugar ham. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the biscuits were to DIE FOR DO YOU HEAR ME. Light and tasty, not heavy. The gravy was good, and the ham slice was dee-lish. In the end, we couldnt finish our meals because there was so much food. The portions are very generous. For a first time in this tiny place I had heard so much about, I was impressed, and I would go back.

Went here for the first time today. Awesome! Yes there was a line but that only means good food. Not a lot of tables means they wont be overwhelmed. The food was tasty and the service was great! Weird hours but it's family owned so understandable.

This tiny restaurant has amazing food, good service, and homemade pies. The biscuits are some of the best I've ever had which makes their biscuits and gravy delicious. Everything I've had there is delicious. It's just good, home cooked-style food. Now, the downside. It' pretty small. There are about 12 tables, though they somehow accomodate larger groups. You may have to wait for a table--but it is so worth it. During the summer and on the weekends its not unusual to see a line out the door. And if you want baked goods to take home, get there early. I think they're only open until 2pm anyway. In the winter it gets pretty cold inside, so make sure you wear layers. The parking lot is also sort of small, but there is other parking, and its right across from the river which is especially nice in the summer. But nothing bad about the food or service. I frequently make the trip down to Flat Rock early in the morning for the food and to take home a frozen pie or some cinnamon rolls. Prices aren't bad either, though I'd pay more for food this good.

This is a good place for breakfast. The seating area is really small and sometimes the wait can be lengthy. Their bakery selection is second to none. Every kind of pie can be found here. Their staff is very busy and tends to be abrupt sometimes. But overall a swell place to eat. The one draw back that I can see is the pricing structure. Most things are ala carte and it adds up quickly. There are a few exceptions to this.

Great breakfast spot! Family favorites and everything we got was cooked perfectly! I love their chicken and dumpling soup. The places looks like a dive but the food is delicious!
